Myxomycete Plates

These plates are of species collected in the field at Black Sugarloaf, Birralee, northern Tasmania. This is a work in progress and plates of the approximately 115 species collected so far will be added in the coming weeks and months. Each plate has descriptions and photographs of mature fructifications (i.e. sporangia, plasmodiocarps, pseudoaethalium or aethalium) plus micrographs of peridium, stem, columella, capillitium, calyculus and spores. Most plates are less than 1.7 MB.

References used for identification include Poulain et al. (2011); Neubert et al. (1993-2000); Stephenson & Stempen (1994); Stephenson (2003); Nannenga-Bremekamp (1991); and various scientific papers and websites. However, many Australian myxomycetes 'don't quite fit published descriptions' (S.L. Stephenson pers. com.) and species in some genera (e.g. Cribraria) are notoriously difficult to identify. Undescribed species are included and feedback as to their identity is welcome.

Duplicates of most collections have been lodged at the National Herbarium of Victoria (MEL). These may be requested for study by researchers.
